Skin Care & Skin Peels

Skin Facts

  • The most important aesthetic organ
Take Care of Yours

One of the factors that vibrant and radiant skin depends on is constant cell turnover. Everyday the skin is constantly sloughing off thousands of dead cells and replacing them with new ones. In babies this cyclical process replaces the surface skin every few days whereas in our 20s this slows down to about every three weeks and later on to about a month or more. The result of slower skin turnover is duller, less even toned skin, blemishes and fine lines. That coupled with other factors that keep the skin looking fresh and young such as decreased elastin & collagen production leads to skin that we call aged. This is where medical skin care treatments such as exfoliations, microdermabrassions and chemical peels are important.

Obagi Nu-Derm System - obagi.com

Chemical peels are used to improve the skin's appearance by applying a chemical solution to the skin, causing the superficial dead layers of skin to separate, peel off and to stimulate the production of new healthy cells. The new skin looks brighter and fresher with an overall new softer glow and may be even more even in colour. The depth of separation and peeling depends on the strength and type of peel used and your doctor will help you decide which will be best for your individual treatment plan. However, one fact me must tell you is to start early to stay keep your skin looking young, fresh and radiant.

Skin Conditions That Chemical Peels Can Improve
  • Fine Lines & Wrinkles
  • Uneven Pigmentation / blemishes
  • Sun Damage
  • Age Spots
  • Acne & Acne Scarring
  • Freckling

There are basically three different types of peel available: the superficial peels (AHA) medium peels (TCA) and deep peels (Phenols). Our most popular peels are the AHA /Glycolic acid peels and The Obagi Blue Peels. Both have various indications for use and the depth of the peel can be adjusted to suit your time schedule depending if you want no down time to work to a week of downtime. A consultation with CosMedocs will include analysing your skin and helping you decide which treatment plan will best suit your individual skin type. All skin peels require skin pre conditioning with medical grade cosmeceuticals to prepare your skin for peels. You might be surprised that after just using the preconditioners your skin has already become fresh with a nice radiant glow (see pictures - obagi Nu-Derm System)

Which chemical peel and when?
Choosing the correct type of chemical peel for each patient is the most important step. Only very experienced dermatologists and plastic surgeons after a careful skin examination are able to suggest the best agent to use.

The choice depends on many factors such as: skin type, age, condition to be treated and degree of the condition, realistic expectations of the patient, philosophy of sun exposure.

FAQ

How are they performed?
Chemical peels are performed by first cleansing the skin with an agent that removes excess oils; eyes and hair are protected, applying the peel to the designated location (face, neck, chest, hands, arms, or legs), using one or more chemical solutions, such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or carbolic acid (phenol). CosMedocs will advise which peel would be the proper peeling agent (superficial, medium or deep) based upon the type of skin damage present and your desired results.

During a chemical peel, most patients experience a warm to hot sensation that may last about 5 to 10 minutes and may be followed by some stinging. Deeper peels can be more painful usually requiring medication during or after the procedure, and require a longer recovery time. However, the majority of clients require superficial to medium peels.

Depending upon the type of peel applied, there may be a mild to severe sunburn-like sensation. The gentlest type of peel, a superficial peel, usually produces redness lasting a day, which is followed by minor scaling that a few days afterwards.

Medium-depth and deep peels can result in swelling and blisters that may break, crust, turn brown, and peel off over a period of seven to 14 days or longer. Some peels may require surgical tape to be placed on part or all of the treated skin. To minimize the reappearance of lesions and lines, CosMedocs may recommend daily use of a broad-spectrum (blocks ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays) sunscreen.

Complications Of Chemical Peel
Certain skin types combined with certain peels have a risk of developing a temporary or permanent skin color change. This risk increases if you take birth control pills, have been pregnant, or have a family history of brownish discoloration on the face. Persistent redness also may occur after a chemical peel and can last for a few weeks to months. There is a risk of scarring after a medium to deep chemical peel, although the rate is low. If scarring does occur, it can usually be treated with good results. However, necessary precautions should be taken for patients with a history of fever blisters, cold sores or keloids.
